As some of you might now I spent one week this year in Samois-sur-Seine in France, to learn from the best in order to improve my guitar playing. I found out that some of the best Gypsy jazz players in the world (Stochelo Rosenberg, Angelo Debarre, Fapy Lafertin, Bireli Lagrene…) gather there every year, so it was definitely a good idea to go and spend some time amongst them.
Samois 2016 was my first time camping for the Django Reinhardt Festival: I absolutely loved camping there as it was full of incredible jam sessions, a lot to learn just by watching!
I had the privilege to spot these real Gypsy jazz masters at work, having a little jam under a gazebo: in this video we have Fapy Lafertin (guitar), Mogeli Geisler (guitar), Matcho Winterstein (guitar) and Daniel Weltlinger (violin)… a real treat for your ears!
I find this group of players’ level of musicianship incredible: the way they play together, the chords they use, their note choice and time keeping.
I feel very lucky to have spotted this and many more jam sessions in Samois this year, and I can’t wait for next year!
